Boolean Search

  1. Mulitple terms in one search field automatically returns an ‘OR’ result
  2. Terms in additional fields return an ‘AND’ result
  3. Click the drop down ‘AND’ to reveal ‘NOT’ giving ‘AND NOT’
  4. Ticking the ‘exact’ checkbox returns phrase results
  5. The full Boolean expression is given above the results

Filtering

Filter by Owner Type

Filter by Group

Filter by Country

Filter by Discipline

Notes

  • An ‘Owner’ is the entity that owns the IP associated with the technology listed in the database.
  • Owners can belong to ‘Groups’ with other owners, such as science parks where they are tenants, trade organisations, expos where they exhibited, government programs, etc.

Saved Search Email Alerts

Click [save search] (far right of screen) to rerun a particular search whenever you want. New technologies that match a saved search are then sent to users in email alerts.

Favourites

Click on the ♡ next to the title link of a technology to save an item in your 'Favourites' list.

Classification/Taxonomies

  • Built specifically for our data, the taxonomies allow us to tag items according to two structures, allowing users to browse (or refine) by discipline, function, or both
  • Machine learning is training to work with these taxonomies

Technical Information

The Database contains huge amounts of information from a wide range of sources, but we only display a small amount of it.

  • Because the keyword being searched may not appear in the short description displayed (although it will be in the full description), we do not use keyword highlighting in the results
  • Searches return the top 200 results. If your search produces many more than 200 results, you may want to return to the search and refine it to get the correct selection of results you require.

To access the full details of a technology, we send users to the owner’s site.

  • We translate all sources into English for ease of searching our Database, but the owner’s site may be in another language; using Chrome as your browser allows an automatic ‘translate this page’ function — currently the best option outside of a bespoke scientific translation
  • Sometimes, between our scheduled system refreshes, a third party site may change. We refresh regularly to keep these to a minimum, but if you do find a broken link it can be reported to us using the ‘Report issue’ link beneath each technology summary

Enterprise Class

  • Our Database uses industry-leading components from IBM, Microsoft, AWS, and Neo4j
  • It is hosted in an enterprise-class environment
  • Specialist security advisers, trusted by GCHQ, help us to ensure that users’ data is completely secure

Bespoke Code and Configuration

  • We developed all our own code for retrieving and refreshing the data
  • We used NASA scientists to develop our classification system
  • We used an academic from UCL to create our machine learning algorithms
